State parks to offer additional recreational opportunities in 2019 -- Ashe County’s two state park properties attracted more than 345,000 visitors in 2018, according to Superintendent Joseph Shimel. New River State Park and Mount Jefferson State Natural Area staff are preparing for more visitors in 2019 as they expand scenic and recreational opportunities for Ashe County residents and visitors.
“We are working with New River Conservancy to begin plans for renovations on the Elk Shoals property,” Shimel said. “We hope to have the swim beach and also the Chapel on the New available this coming spring.”
