The New River is a tributary of the Kanawha River and is
approximately 320 miles long, spanning through West
Virginia, Virginia and North Carolina. The New River begins
at the confluence of the North Fork New River and South Fork
New River in Ashe County and flows up through the Iron
Mountains of Virginia and into West Virginia. Even though
the river’s name is the New River, it is widely believed to
be one of the oldest in the world, second only to the Nile
River. Geologists confirm that it is indeed very old, and
probably the oldest in North America because its course
runs from south to north, against the topography of the
Appalachian Mountains, thus making most believe that the
river pre-existed the mountains and surrounding land
formation.
The NC New River in Ashe County is home to a variety of
fish, making it a fishing hotspot for the Western NC

walleye, bluegill, carp, and muskellunge fish in the NC New
River. There are several fishing companies and guide shops
located throughout Ashe County NC and the High Country. Stop
